Academy of Natural Sciences The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia was founded in 1812 for the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences, and the advancement of useful learning. The unique aspect of this statement of purpose lies in the word "useful," a mandate the Academy has continuously redefined through research and education that reflects the societal needs of the times. The Academy's history mirrors the evolution of the relationship between the American people and the natural world. The oldest natural sciences institution in the Western Hemisphere, the Academy was founded when the United States hugged the Atlantic coastline, and Philadelphia was the cultural, commercial, and scientific center of the new nation. Classic expeditions to explore the western wilderness, such as those led by Stephen Long and Ferdinand Hayden, were organized at the Academy. These explorers brought back new species of plants and animals, which were studied and catalogued; they formed the foundation of the Academy's scientific collections which now contain over 25,000,000 specimens. Franklin Institute Benjamin Franklin lived a rich and fascinating life that spanned 84 years (1706-1790). He certainly lived true to his own advice. He is remembered not only as a printer, but also as a scientist, inventor, philanthropist, statesman, writer, and genius. Widely known as a master inventor, Franklin is probably best remembered for his electrical experiments. Although his famous kite experiment was very dangerous, it gave him important insights into the nature of electricity. Inventions credited to Franklin are the Franklin stove, the lightning rod, the home ventilating system, the glass armonica, and the bifocal. Hope Lodge / Mather Mill You will see two time periods represented in the house. Some rooms are shown as the house would have been furnished when it was first built by Samuel Morris, in the Colonial era -- 1743 to 1770. Other rooms are shown as the house was lived in by the last private owners, William and Alice Degn, from 1922 to 1953. Although the Colonial period had been over for a century, the Degns decorated with colonial objects to preserve both the objects and the house. This style of furnishing is now known as Colonial Revival. The combination of rooms will allow you to learn the difference between the actual Colonial period and the Colonial Revival period at Hope Lodge. Mather Mill is also called Farmar's Mill. It was probably built in the late 17th century by Edward Farmar and was included in the 150 acres purchased by Samuel Morris. Samuel Morris's brother sold the mill and four acres of land to Isaac Mather, whose son built the present mill in 1820. It continued in operation until the late 19th century. Today, the structure is used for meetings, displays, and special programs. The Mill is a block from Hope Lodge. For More Info... Map to Hope Lodge & Mather Mill maps.expedia.com 553 S. Moravian Pottery and Tile Works The Moravian Pottery and Tile Works was established by noted anthropologist, antiquarian, artist, writer, and tile-maker Henry C. Mercer, a leader in the turn-of-the-century Arts and Crafts movement, in an effort to recreate early Pennsylvania pottery manufacturing techniques. In style, the Tile Works is an adaptation of the California Mission Church, partly chosen because Mercer believed good art came from religious faith; in construction it reflects the early use of reinforced concrete for industrial purposes. The Moravian Tile Works is his second building, constructed after the first was destroyed by fire. The name Moravian is derived from his collection of old Moravian stove plates. Mercer's factory produced tiles depicting Pennsylvania flora and fauna. Mercer was awarded a gold medal at the 1904 St. Louis Exposition and a 1921 gold medal from the American Institute of Architects. The Tile Works is owned by the Bucks County Historical Society and is open to the public as a museum illustrating Mercer's tile making techniques. Phone 215-345-6722 For More Info... Old Barracks Museum In 1758, the Barracks was the biggest building in Trenton. About 300 British and Irish soldiers were the first to live here. The building was made of stone and had dark red woodwork. There were about 20 soldiers rooms, each with two windows, a door and a fireplace. Twelve soldiers were put in a room. Two men slept in each wooden bunk. The soldiers received rations of food, firewood, candles, cider, salt, and vinegar. There was a kitchen in the cellar, but most soldiers cooked in their rooms. Winterthur Museum, Gardens and Library Explore and enjoy our museum, garden and library. See the museum's magnificent collection of American antiques celebrating the best in style and craftsmanship. Delight your senses with a stroll through the glorious 60-acre garden and surrounding landscape of hills, waterways, and rolling meadows. Discover the nationally renowned research library that is a center for the study of American art and material culture. Our tours give you an overview of the collection of American decorative arts (or antiques) housed within the museum at Winterthur. We begin the tour in a room with a special dresser full of dishes because behind it is the story of how the museum was started. Henry Francis du Pont, the museum's founder, saw this dresser in the home of his friend Electra Webb in Vermont. He was captivated by its design, the color of the dishes, and their history. Inspired, he began to collect objects that had been used in American homes between 1640 and 1840. Today, the collection's date range has been extended to 1860, and it now contains 85,000 objects in 175 period rooms. The tour you will take here (and its counterpart at the museum) highlights certain rooms and objects within this large complex. For More Info...
